COURSE TITLE: 　Exploring America’s 20th Century Visual Culture 

DESCRIPTION: 　The course will explore the history of graphic and industrial design through the century and investigate the designers who influenced the look of the world. The course will not only show their work and talk about their personal history but seek to explain the ideas behind their designs.

Primary Focus 1 - Graphic Design

Typefaces, Corporate Identity, Magazines, Album Covers, Posters, Packaging

Primary Focus 2 - Designers;

Herbert Bayer, Alexey Brodovitch, Ray Eames, Buckminster Fuller, Thomas Geismar, Milton Glaser, Frank Lloyd Wright, Raymond Loewy, Paul Rand, Saul Bass, David Carson, and more.

Secondary Focus - Industrial Design

Household Appliances, Transportation, Furniture, Clothing

Week 4（6/  5）: Public Interest Campaigns 1930–1940

Week 5（6/12）: The Birth of Information Design 1940–1950

Week 6（6/19）: Corporate Identities & International Style 1950–1960

Week 7（6/26）: Pop & Protest 1960–1970

Week 8（7/  3）: Postmodernism in Design 1970–1980

Week 9（7/10）: Digital Design 1970–1990

Week 10（7/17） : Graphic Design & Globalization 1990–2000
